The “Dutch DMV”

On Friday morning, we went to the Gemeente (town hall) to exchange our California driving licenses for Dutch ones. Although we had an appointment scheduled, the whole process eventually required us to talk to three different people at three different desks in a mixture of English and Dutch and took about an hour; however, it was still infinitely better than dealing with a DMV in the US. Now let’s hope it only takes a month for the licenses to be ready and not half a year like it did for one of my colleagues.

Eisenvisit

We are having a very nice visit from Nancy’s parents. For the past few days we’ve been enjoying Maastricht together:

Before that we explored Amsterdam together, including keukenhof:

No plans for the coming days except to relax together.

Amsterdam with the Ouders

Thus begins our Summer of continuous visitors. We met up with my parents in Amsterdam this week and did the standard tourist activities: the Rijksmuseum, the van Gogh museum, a canal boat tour of the city, and tulips at the Keukenhof garden. Now we are back in Maastricht for a relaxing Limburg vacation.

Also, dad managed to find knee-high-piece chess games both in Amsterdam at Max Euweplein and at Keukenhof. A Dutch guy even challenged him to a game!

Eisenorems in Eijsden

Today we went cycling to Eijden. We had a bit of a set-back when I discovered that the back brakes on my little blue convertible were not functioning, but after a trip to drop it off at the bike repair shop we continued, this time with Vroomeer.

The spring scenery along the Maas on the way was gorgeous and we had lunch at Eetcafe Aon ‘t Bat on a lovely deck overlooking the Maas.

There was even an international border-crossing ferry that we watched taking people back and forth across the river to Belgium.
