Thanksgiving Visitor

Hendrik’s brother, Gerrit, visited from Boston for Thanksgiving week! Hendrik only gets to see his brother about once per year so he was very excited about the visit. We enjoyed Portland cuisines and microbrews, shopped at the Nike company store, played video games, and of course had Thanksgiving dinner with Hendrik’s family.

November Birthdays are the Best

Especially when they fall on weekends. Even rainy Portland was kind enough to give me a sunny, crisp Fall day for my birthday. It was a delicious birthday weekend during which I stuffed myself with Mexican food, Ramen, pulled pork, and chocolate cake! We also went to the Symphony and listened to Beethoven and Bruckner.

Co-worker wedding

Nancy and I were invited to the wedding of a co-worker of mine. We got dressed up and took a lyft to a very cool venue in inner Southeast Portland.

We had a wonderful time, and took the opportunity to bond with my coworkers at the bank.

This co-worker met his wife in graduate school: he is a statistician, she is a mathematician. The attendees seemed to be majority mathematicians as well. It was a fantastic evening.

Trick or Treat

Yesterday we handed out candy to trick-or-treaters for the first time in our new house. We were surprised that we only had nine of them but there were some outstanding costumes amongst that small crowd. Hendrik’s favorite was a toddler David Bowie from Labyrinth. We also had a jester who actually juggled for us. I would argue he is the only one who actually earned his candy.

In between doorbell rings, we watched Dark, a spooky Netflix series. We watched in the original German so I could do some listening practice. It went pretty well. I usually only had to pause once or twice an episode to get caught up on a conversation I couldn’t follow.

Now we just have to figure out what to do with the mountains of leftover candy.
