Scare Trek

We went to a friend’s Halloween party last weekend. We are continuing to adapt a past costume, now with a new theme: worst-of-star trek.

In this year’s edition, we are Captain Janeway and Ensign Paris in the Voyager episode Threshold, easily the worst of the series. They turn into lizards.

Fruit Loops and Wine

Last weekend we went out to Hood River with friends to try local wine and stop at some farms along the Fruit Loop, a collection of orchards on the other side of Mount Hood.

It was cold and rainy, but with bits of sunlight resulting in almost constant rainbows. Our newfound local wine expert was right: we like the intensely flavorful but dry wines from the Gorge much better than those from the Willamette valley.

Weekend at the coast

Monday was a bank holiday, so Nancy took the day off and we had a three day weekend. We enjoyed a couple of nights at the beach with my parents and their dog:

Orion took to the beach, but wasn’t so fond of the water. We also observed him running full-speed for the first time, and discovered that he is shockingly fast when motivated by a seagull.

The poodle-bracelet

Orion’s favorite thing is to cuddle between us on the sofa. After dinner yesterday we spent some time indulging him; over the course of an hour or so, he gradually wrapped himself around Nancy’s wrist:

I call this position the poodle-bracelet. He’s becoming more and more comfortable in his new home, as you can see.

Doggy Weekend

Orion had a busy weekend! He started early, lazing between us on the couch while we worked from home on Friday. Then he went wine tasting at Great Wine Buys on Broadway and to dinner on the patio at the Rose and Thistle. On Saturday he went to Oktoberfest at Fressen Bakery and was delighted to help me with my bratwurst.

We decided it was about time to tire him out so we took him for quite a few walks through the neighborhood. It took about five miles each day to wear him out. So much for, “oh he’ll probably be happy with a walk around the block every other day.”

Dog training

The dog is very good at training us. He just looks at us with his cute little round eyes and we melt. And it is surprisingly difficult to stay firm when he tries to cuddle.

We signed up for a basic manners class starting in November so hopefully that will help with his behavior and ours!

Orion’s first walk

Our new buddy’s past owners were all quite elderly, and we suspect that he had never been on a walk (except for a couple of times with Humane Society volunteers).

He’s a fast learner though, and displays far more energy than we were told to expect. Even after a 3 mile walk, he seemed to have plenty of energy left.
