We made a spontaneous decision (shocking, I know) and decided to fly to Budapest for a long weekend. So this morning we hopped on a plane and made it to Hungary in time to have lunch by Heroes Square. Then we walked around the park and had a spa day at the Széchenyi Baths.
I think I have found the Dutch version of April showers bring May flowers, except the bad weather spans three months.
Maart roert zijn staart, april doet wat hij wil en mei doet er ook nog wat bij.
The literal translation is March wags his tail, April does what he wants, and May also does a little of everything. It basically means the weather is totally unpredictable in March, April, and May.
That said, it has now taken a turn for the sunny and warm!
For the last few weeks (perhaps in honor of King’s Day), the Dutch weather has been giving us the Royal Dutch treatment, by which I mean it has been endlessly raining. Even the Dutch people are starting to get annoyed by it because the drizzly winter is supposed to be over. Just as we blame Canada for unseasonably cold weather, here they blame Greenland, which seemed reasonable given that it dipped below freezing many of the nights meaning that in addition to rain we sometimes saw snow, sleet, or hail. I told the other Americans that this is probably due to God expressing his opinion about monarchy.
